About meArtist Statement:
The intimate moments of pregnancy, birth and the mother/baby relationship that Melanie witnesses in her daily life as a Midwife inspire her works which celebrate the feminine spirit and transformation. She combines the graceful feminine curves with attributes from ancient goddesses to create her modern Goddess Collection which reminds us to claim our strength, power and confidence to go forth as Empowered Women!
Her roots in sustainable living have drawn her to collect misfit, retired jewelry components which she artfully combines with enchanting gemstones and precious metals to form her Rebirthed Collection. Each unique piece includes a birth story about its creation and meaning of the stones. Melanie is committed to supporting families through sustaining midwifery care in New Mexico by donating a portion of her proceeds to birth centers, midwife diversity and midwifery education.
Melanie is an independent woman with many talents and interests. She enjoys creating with many different mediums including metal, stone, fiber and plants. She grew up on a farm and ranch in the Texas Panhandle and uses this experience to inspire her welded metal garden sculptures made from reclaimed farm equipment. Her love for plants and native landscapes blossomed while living in California where she designed gardens and fell in love with orchids. You can smell fragrant orchids blooming in every room of her modest home. She used the principles of sustainable landscaping to create her magical garden filled with food, grazing chickens and buzzing beehives. Her love for creating jewelry began in 2004 and has grown from mostly donating recycled necklaces to benefit midwifery education to creating her own original designs. In addition to being a jewelry artist, Melanie practices as a full time Nurse Midwife in New Mexico and is passionate about Empowering women thru their pregnancy, birth and motherhood journey.
